A Struggle

Recently, I've been trying to understand 'Kisi-kisi UN 2018' by reading a book entitled English for Social Purposes by Hammond et al.. It is published by National Centre for English Language Teaching and Research, Macquarie University.Well, it took me some time to understand the first part of the book as I had to recall what my lecturer told me a few years ago. And here I am, writing to you a summary of what I have read on the part one.

SYSTEMIC-FUNCTIONAL LINGUISTICS has three tenets.
  1. Language is functional, which means language is used to make specific meanings.
  2. There is a purpose for using language, which is called context.
  3. This theory focuses on language at text level. A text can be as short as one sentence such as STOP, or as long as a book.
GENRE is how people in a culture get things done or achieve common goals using a language. Genre is realized by schematic structure (beginning, middle, and ending) and social purpose.

REGISTER is the configuration of language features in a text. There are three variables that determine the language choice in a text; they are:
  1. Field : choice of vocabulary and verbs.
  2. Tenor : use of modality and modulation, choice of personal pronouns.
  3. Mode : cohesive ties in spoken or written text.
That's all I've got. Thanks for stopping by. See ya. XOXO.
